The catalogue is based on the exhibition Vytautas Jurkūnas (1910–1993). A Graphic Artist with a Camera, which was held at the Vilnius Graphic Art Centre in June –July 2021. Vytautas Jurkūnas Senior, an established figure of Lithuanian graphic art, is known to many as a gifted illustrator of books. For many years he taught at the State Institute of Art of Soviet Lithuania, nurturing more than one generation of graphic artists. However, relatively little is known about the artist’s early and wartime work (1929–1945). Between the two world wars Jurkūnas created important works charged with social criticism and works on the subject of war, also a modern cycle of prints called Fishermen (1937–1939), the first of its kind in Lithuania and therefore a work of national significance. Later, at the end of WWII, he produced a cycle called Brutalities of Hitler’s Invaders (1945–1946), one of the most famous works reflecting on the experience of the war.

The publication presents for the first time a thorough overview of Jurkūnas’ early graphic art legacy; moreover, it includes his photographic archive, which reveals new details of the artist’s biography and art. The catalogue contains six texts, illustrated by 120 reproductions of Jurkūnas’ works, photos, documents etc., most of which are introduced to the public for the first time.
