This is a catalogue of the exhibition Hey, Pop Art! The Work of Lithuanian Graphic Artists in the 1960s and 1970s, which was held at the Vilnius Centre of Graphic Art in June–July 2020.
In the 1960s the art scene of the USA and other Western countries was dominated by pop art, a bold and ironic art movement, which in the Soviet Union was officially considered as the embodiment of bad taste of the capitalist world. Regardless of this negative view, almost at the same time the manifestations of this trend emerged in Lithuanian graphic art. One could rarely see pop art prints in showrooms, but this Western aesthetics was spreading with the large print runs of posters, books and magazines, and became part and parcel of the visual culture in Soviet Lithuania. During this period, graphic artists, more than any other artists in Lithuania, were at the forefront of art. They broke rules, pushing back the boundaries of official art, and trespassed the boundaries between different fields of art. The publication is divided into chapters according to the themes that characterise Lithuanian pop art: youth culture, psychedelic, socialist and national pop art. The publication presents a thorough analysis of Lithuanian pop art; it also includes articles about hippie subculture and rock music in Soviet Lithuania, which provide the context of the period. The publication is a valuable addition to Lithuanian art research; at the same time, it introduces to the public important aspects in the development of graphic art in the second half of the 20th century.
