The book is dedicated to the life and work of Rimantas Sakalauskas (born in 1951), a pivotal artist of Lithuanian modernism. It is a comprehensive, engaging and brilliantly illustrated story about a legendary sculptor, his works and his milieu.
Sakalauskas started his career in art with the class of sculptors of 1977, which included such innovative artists as Mindaugas Navakas, Ksenija Jaroševaitė and Vladas Urbanavičius. The impact of the artist’s work derives from his in-depth and original way in which he treats the themes of memory and continuity of culture. His attention to these themes has determined his art style, which draws on the heritage of the past and makes it relevant again. Sakalauskas’ work is not widely covered in the media, but its significance and influence have always been tangible, both in the Soviet times and nowadays as well. The appendixes of the book include a representative catalogue of his works and fragments of his literary texts. The book is a valuable source of reference to those who are interested in Lithuanian history, its cultural development in Soviet times and nowadays.
